I was born and raised in one of the poorest counties in South Carolina. For the first eleven years of my life, my family and I moved from one dilapidated home to another with no running water and the use of outside bathrooms. I was raised by a hardworking mother and an alcoholic father. My brothers and I had very little clothing and sometimes little food. Through it all, I motivated myself by dreaming of bigger and better things for my life. I graduated from college and left home to work for the federal government. I have walked through the Pentagon hallways and mingled with Congress members on Capitol Hill.
Eventually, I returned to school and graduated at the top of my class with a Master’s in Criminal Justice. I enrolled in a long yet rewarding doctoral program a few years later. I graduated with a PhD in Human Services, concentrating on Disaster, Crisis, and Intervention. Today, I am a college professor teaching Criminal Justice classes to undergraduate students and trying to be a positive influence on my students.
If a small-town southern girl like myself can make it, you, too, can be successful. Just believe in yourself. Never, ever give up. Keep dreaming and ignite the fire from within!
